Abscessed Tooth: Oh The Pain!

July 22, 2020

At one time or another, many people have experienced mouth pain, specifically, a sudden throbbing pain near a tooth or the gums that got worse over time. Chances are, the culprit is an abscessed tooth. Left untreated, an abscessed tooth can turn into a serious, life-threatening condition.

At the office of Michael I. Feinberg, DDS, we provide comprehensive endodontic treatment to help patients with a wide range of problems including tooth abscesses. Our office is equipped with the state-of-the-art technology and we have established a reputation for providing the highest quality of care. An abscessed tooth is a pocket of pus that can form in different parts of a tooth as a result of a bacterial infection. There are several different types of abscesses depending on its location — the tooth’s root, the gum next to the root, or on the gums.

Regardless of the kind of abscess you have, the symptoms are quite uncomfortable and can include:

  • pain that gets worse when you lie down
  • pain that radiates to your ear, jaw, or neck
  • pain when chewing or biting
  • swollen, red gums
  • tooth sensitivity
  • discolored or loose teeth
  • bad breath
  • tender or swollen lymph nodes in your neck or under your jaw
  • fever

Treatment for an abscessed tooth focuses on clearing up the infection and relieving pain. Depending on the type and severity of your abscess, treatment options include draining the abscess, a root canal procedure (a treatment used for removing infection from inside a tooth), or antibiotics.
